Every winter, Prague becomes a gateway to the mountains. Families flying in from the UK, Scandinavia and the Middle East land at Václav Havel Airport with ski bags and boot bags and head straight for the Krkonoše, the Czech Republic's highest range, or drive on into the Austrian Alps. The transfer is the part of a ski holiday most people leave until last. It is also the part that can take half a day if it goes wrong. This guide covers ski transfers from Prague by private chauffeur: drive times to the main resorts, what to do with skis and luggage, how winter roads change the plan, and which weeks to book early.
Prague ski transfers at a glance
- Czech resorts (Krkonoše): Špindlerův Mlýn, Pec pod Sněžkou and Harrachov are each about 2 hours from Prague Airport in clear conditions.
- Jizera Mountains: Liberec and the slopes of Ještěd are about 1.5 hours away.
- Austrian Alps: Salzburg is about 4 hours from Prague. The Ski amadé resorts, Schladming and the Zell am See and Saalbach area take roughly 4.5 to 5.5 hours in total.
- Vehicles: Mercedes-Benz V-Class is the default ski car (up to 6 passengers and 6 bags). E-Class or S-Class suit couples travelling light.
- Winter-ready: our cars are winter-equipped and drivers know the mountain approaches. On snow days, pickup times are planned around the forecast.
- Price: one fixed quote for the whole car, agreed before pickup. Request a quote.
In short: land, find your driver in Arrivals, load the skis once and step out at the hotel door in the mountains.
Why transfer from Prague for a ski trip?
Prague has more direct flights than any airport near the Czech mountains, and it is often cheaper to fly into than the Alpine airports in peak weeks. The problem has always been the last stretch. By public transport, Špindlerův Mlýn means a bus from Prague to Vrchlabí, then a local bus up the valley, with skis, boots and suitcases at every change. That works for a student with a backpack. It does not work for a family of five.
A private transfer turns that into one continuous journey: from the arrivals hall to the hotel door, on your schedule, with a single loading of the luggage.
Czech resorts: the Krkonoše in about two hours
The Krkonoše (Giant Mountains) on the Polish border are the Czech Republic's main ski region and the easiest mountain trip from Prague.
Špindlerův Mlýn
The best-known Czech resort, with the most extensive lift system in the country and slopes for every level. The usual route runs north-east on the D10 towards Mladá Boleslav, then on country roads through Jičín and Vrchlabí and up the Labe (Elbe) valley. Expect about two hours from Prague Airport in normal conditions, more in fresh snow. Many hotels sit along the valley road and on the slopes of Svatý Petr, so we confirm your exact address when you book.
Pec pod Sněžkou
At the foot of Sněžka, the highest peak in the Czech Republic, Pec suits families and has a cable car to the summit. The usual route is the D11 motorway east towards Hradec Králové, then north via Trutnov. Again, allow about two hours.
Harrachov and Rokytnice nad Jizerou
In the western Krkonoše, Harrachov is known for its ski jumps and its glassworks, and Rokytnice has some of the longest runs in the country. Both are reached via the D10 and Turnov, in about two hours.
Jizera Mountains and Ještěd
For a shorter trip, Liberec is about 1.5 hours from Prague, and the slopes of Ještěd, with its landmark summit tower, are on the edge of the city. See the Prague to Liberec route.
A note on the final kilometres. Some hotels in Špindlerův Mlýn and Pec sit on access roads where cars are restricted or that need chains in heavy snow. When a hotel can only be reached by its own shuttle or snowcat, we drop you at the agreed meeting point and coordinate the timing with the hotel.
The Austrian Alps: one drive from Prague
Prague is also a practical starting point for the Austrian resorts, often closer than it looks on the map. The route runs south on the D3 past Tábor and České Budějovice, crosses into Austria and continues on the S10 to Linz and the A1 towards Salzburg, about 4 hours in total. See the full Prague to Salzburg route.
From Salzburg, the main ski regions are a short distance further:
- Ski amadé (Flachau, Wagrain, Altenmarkt): roughly 4.5 hours in total from Prague.
- Schladming–Dachstein: roughly 5 hours.
- Zell am See–Kaprun and Saalbach Hinterglemm: roughly 5 to 5.5 hours.
Austria's Saturday changeover matters here. On peak Saturdays, traffic towards the resorts on the A10 and around Salzburg can add an hour or more. When we can, we suggest an early start or a Friday or Sunday arrival. If your accommodation allows it, it makes the drive noticeably calmer.
Skis, boots and suitcases: choosing the car
Ski luggage changes the maths. A ski bag is long, boot bags are bulky, and families pack for a week.
- Mercedes-Benz V-Class: the default ski car. Up to 6 passengers and 6 bags. With full ski kit (a ski bag, a boot bag and a suitcase each), plan on fewer passengers per car. Tell us the exact number of ski bags when you book and we will confirm the space or suggest a second car.
- Mercedes-Benz E-Class or S-Class: suits a couple with suitcases and boot bags, or skiers who rent equipment at the resort.
- Child seats (rear-facing infant, forward-facing toddler or booster) are included at no extra cost. Tell us the children's ages.
A useful alternative: many resorts in both the Krkonoše and Austria rent excellent equipment. Renting skis at the resort and travelling with only boots and suitcases makes the transfer simpler and often lets a family travel in one car.
Winter driving: how the plan changes on snow days
Mountain transfers are not the same as motorway runs, and we plan them differently.
- Winter-equipped cars. All our vehicles run on winter tyres in the season, and drivers carry snow chains for the mountain approaches.
- We watch the forecast. Before every mountain pickup, your chauffeur checks weather and road reports. If heavy snow is expected, we will suggest an earlier pickup or a different approach.
- Slow is normal. In fresh snow, the last 20 km up the valley can take as long as the motorway section. Built-in margins mean that is not a problem for your check-in.
- Flight tracking works both ways. For arrivals, the driver follows your flight. For the return, we plan the pickup from your departure time with an extra margin for mountain roads.
Peak weeks: when to book early
Ski transfers have the sharpest demand peaks of the year. Book at least a few weeks ahead for:
- Christmas to New Year, the busiest week of the season in both the Czech mountains and Austria.
- February half-term in the UK and winter school holidays across Europe.
- Czech spring holidays (jarní prázdniny), which rotate by region through February and March and fill the Czech resorts.
- Saturdays throughout the season, when most Austrian rentals change over.
If you are travelling in a group with several families, book all the cars together. That way they travel in convoy and arrive at the same time.
Turning it into a longer trip
Many skiers combine the mountains with a few days in Prague. Some do it at the start, around the Prague Christmas markets. Others stop in Salzburg on the way back. We can arrange the whole itinerary under one booking: airport to the mountains, mountains to Prague and Prague to the airport. For festive ideas, see our guide to Christmas markets by private chauffeur.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get from Prague Airport to Špindlerův Mlýn? About two hours in clear conditions, via the D10 and Vrchlabí. In fresh snow the final valley section can add 30 minutes or more, which we build into the pickup time.
Can you take us from Prague to Austrian ski resorts? Yes. Salzburg is about 4 hours from Prague, and resorts such as Flachau, Schladming, Zell am See and Saalbach are roughly 4.5 to 5.5 hours in total. On peak Saturdays, allow extra time for changeover traffic.
Will our skis fit in the car? In the V-Class, yes. It takes up to 6 passengers and 6 bags, and with full ski kit we plan on fewer passengers per car. Tell us the number of ski bags and boot bags when you book so we can confirm the space or suggest a second car.
Are your cars equipped for snow and mountain roads? Yes. All cars run on winter tyres during the season, drivers carry snow chains, and we check weather and road conditions before every mountain transfer.
Do you also do the return from the resort to Prague Airport? Yes. We plan the pickup at your hotel from your flight's departure time, with an extra margin for mountain roads, and can book both directions together.
How much does a ski transfer from Prague cost? We agree one fixed quote for the whole car before pickup. It includes fuel, vignettes, tolls and driver time, with no meter and no snow-day surcharge. Request a quote with your dates, resort and number of ski bags.
